New brief…

Recently we’ve been given a new brief in technical studies, upto now we have been told to pick out 3 or 4 pictures of designer or highstreet garments which we are going to replicate further into the brief.

I have been working on making a board for my visual studies project at the moment and playing around with effects in photoshop, using tools such as lasso, magic wand and different ways to cut out the image from the background and make it into an individual image.
I have learnt alot about photoshop this lesson we were shown how to transfer a pattern into an image or shape, change the colours of images scanned in or from different sources using a layer adjustment tool changing hue/saturation and to black and white.
I will be able to use all these useful tools for my illustration boards for my recent Sashiko project. Although i have yet to do this successfully.

Creating a basic skirt pattern…

…Using moulage tape on a mannequin, outlining the basic skirt and adding darts was simple enough. Its tracing it off onto cloth and then onto dot & cross paper, that is more difficult this is when you have to be precise and only change the pattern to smoothen out the lines. Once you have the hang of moulage though it is a great way of pattern cutting.

Moving darts…

We began moving darts using a simple way, with a cardboard cutout of a basic bodice cutting out the original darts. Using this way where ever i wanted to move the dart, all i had to do was draw a straight line from were i wanted the dart to begin to the point of prominance. Then closing the original dart on the cardboard cutout using cellotape to close. Tracing off onto.

Illustrators research….

Before leaving for the christmas holidays we were given a brief for lecture studies which was to choose an illustration artist from 1900th century upto 1974th from a list given to us, and one from our own choice. After looking through books such as 100 years of fashion illustration by Cally Blackman and fashion illustration by fashion designer Leid Borellig, i chose Ruth Freeman and Giambattista Valli.

I found Giambattista Valli’s work really interesting aswell as his designer work!! Ruth freman i have struggled to find much on this topic and am yet to look further into her illutration work…

Moulage…

Also this week we have been looking at a different way of pattern making, instead of using the obvious way we have previously been taught were we work directly onto dot and cross paper.

Moulage is an altenative way of pattern making and in my opinion a better way as before making up the garmnet you get a rough idea of what it will fit like when made up.

Using mannequins we used moulage tape onto the mannequins to mark the seams and outline the garment, starting with the obvious side seams, shoulder seams, c/f and c/b then adding things that would be more personal to your design including darts and neckline. When doing this we only mark on one side of the garments front and back because you would never get both sides the same after transfering onto dot and cross paper.

When all lines are marked on front and back, using calico we then pinned a pieces onto the mannequins starting with the front then traced of all the lines onto the calico pinning the darts into place whilst tracing off. And doing the same with the back.

And then tranfering onto dot and cross paper when layed flat. Neaten up and trace off pattern.

Visual Studies…

This week i’ve mostly been working on my visual studies..

Trying to add more to my sketchbook including many samples alongside my sketches. In this sketchbook i am working on the customer profile we got given the first week including inspiration from costume jewellery which i also chose out.

I have then began experimenting with the ideas i have in my sketchbook so far in samples, going from the simplest ideas and exaggerating bits of them or changing them to make the samples more wearable and easier to make if it came to making the garments up in fabric.

Workwear…

After been given are brief, we then had a choice of five customer profiles. I have chosen the manager director who’s workwear would be colours of black, greys and creams with splashes of colour, from her outerwear. Looking at her customer profile i think she would be inspired by designers such as chanel. She would be smart but casual and mix her highstreet brands with designer brands.

We then had to collect images to make a trend board of which we would get our inspiration from for the project, like the pictures above.
